In Her Dark Shadow (Barely There Challenge!) - Part 4/9

Back to regularly scheduled programming! :D Honestly, this isn't that scary. I could see someone freaking out if I came around a corner on the sidewalk and ran into him/her. But I mean, if I saw someone wearing this outfit in the middle of downtown I would just think: 'Oh you don't see that everyday. Wicked!' Hehe. I hope people watchers got some good viewing material, at least.
^_^
So, there isn't much to this outfit. I'm wearing a dress. Blah. Stupid challenge! Haha >_< It's a single garment, though, so I'm wearing the least possible number of pieces. :D To jazz things up a bit, I wore my favorite steampunk specs and some neon socks (and of course there's a colorful backdrop, too!)

Picture

Also, you'll notice that I'm not wearing a single piece of jewelry. This is pretty normal for me.
Generally, I have to consciously remember to add a bauble or two to my outfits. Other times, there are outfits that just really need that little something extra and I automatically know what needs to be added. In this case, though, I wanted to accentuate the minimalist aspect of the outfit by keeping it very clean.

Picture

Earlier this year I won a Style Contest held by Threadless. My prizes included a gift certificate to Sock It To Me. So, I bought several pairs of socks including these babies. I knew I'd be able to do some neat things with them and I don't think I've ever worn neon, so I was like yeah f*ck it, just buy them. Hehe. They're super comfortable and soft. Great quality! Thank you, Threadless and Sock It To Me! <3

I wear these black slotted ankle booties at least once a week. I've become quite smitten with them. They're just perfect. The only thing I'm noticing so far is that the faux leather is quite delicate. I hope it can stand constant wear, because I feel like these are the only shoes of this type that I'll ever need.

Oh and I just want to point out a couple things about this black maxi dress. First off, it's a ModCloth piece and I got it through my swap group. Yay! Second, it's sophisticated as hell. It looks so simple, but it has a subtle complexity and elegance due to the sheer angular fabrics. It's a very smart garment and I think it's the perfect piece to showcase minimalist style. I've worn the dress twice already, but I layered up a lot each time so the dress was cleverly hidden. Click here and here to see two additional ways to style it. I probably won't wear it
à la carte again, so.. yeah. Get a good look from now, I guess. Hehe.
It was 80 degrees and sunny, but I felt quite comfortable. The dress is so breathable that the heat really didn't phase me. So, yeah. In your face, Helios! >=|~ ~ Haha. Have a great weekend, folks! <3

Risk & Reward (Barely There Challenge!) - Part 3/9

So....it's my birthday today or whatever. Bah! >_<
Last year, I wore something super colorful and quirky to celebrate. So, I decided I'd do something similar this time around. My partner knows how much I love tacos. I could eat a taco for breakfast, lunch and dinner, bro. So, he treated me to some breakfast tacos on Saturday and then we spent the day doing a bunch of other stuff and things. :3 <3

Both the gingham blouse and the high waisted polka dot skirt are vintage. Sc0re! :DDD I got the gingham blouse from a vintage shop in Austin last Summer. I think the over-sized lapels are killer and I've always wanted a top in this color/pattern scheme. I got the polka dot skirt from Storenvy. It was my first purchase from there and I'm glad I bought this baby, because it is awesome! It's got pockets, too!

When I laid out the gingham next to the polka dots on my bed, my first reaction was "No." Hehe. But when I tried on both pieces, I thought "Hmm. I might be on to something." Both garments looked odd when laid flat, but they felt right once I had them on. I find that quite strange. Heh. Anyway, I imagine people will either love me or hate me with this one. I heartily accept the consequences. ^_^

Picture

I really love my new gilled white flats. I mean, I probably love looking at them more than I like actually wearing them. Haha. They're the only white shoes I own and honestly, I'm still trying to get used to seeing myself in white shoes. I felt goofy, but black shoes would have been a cop out and brown shoes would have played it safe, too. I don't have a wide range of colors in my shoe closet. So, I did the best with what I had. I'm so afraid of getting these shoes dirty. Haha. I'll try to wear them often, though.

Picture

I know this particular mix of patterns is kind of out there, but I'm happy with it. I believe fashion is about risks and challenges. Without those two things, there is no excitement for me. If style is art (and I believe that it is) then I want to be creative and push boundaries. The worst thing that I could ever do is play it safe. I have a pretty high standard in that regard. What's the point of doing something that you already know, something that has already been tried and tested on the runway or in magazines?

In other words, I think it is very safe to just go with what is trendy. It's like singing a cover song by a great band. You're just showcasing someone else's genius. Come up with something original. It's tougher and scarier, but man when it works out it's the most amazing feeling. It's that feeling which drives me. Once you've had that incredible moment, you can never go back to doing safe outfits.

All I can think about is how I can test the boundaries. I'd rather try to do something new and fail, than do something tried and true and succeed. If it turns out that I failed today, then I'll learn from the failure and move on. However, I will never regret that I tried to lead instead of follow.
You know what I mean?
